Noni History

Imagine an exotic tropical island paradise that exists deep in the South Pacific, where the water, the air, and the land is still pristine.  This island paradise is known as French Polynesia.  The most well-known of all of the  French Polynesian islands is the island of Tahiti.

On these islands, a very special plant grows in abundance.  This plant is known to us by its botanical name of “Morinda citrifolia”.  The native Polynesians, however, know it simply as “Noni”, which when translated means "A Gift from God".

Although it may be new to us, it is not really new at all.  It has been highly valued in Asia, India, and the South Pacific for thousands of years!  As the ancient native Polynesians colonized islands throughout the South Pacific they brought with them their most prized plants from their home islands.  These plants provided food, construction materials, and natural medicines.  Perhaps the most important of these plants is known as Morinda citrifolia, or noni.

Ancient manuscripts handed down from generation to generation described the many valuable uses for this unique plant.  They used the seeds, the bark, the roots, the leaves, the blossoms, and the fruit.  While the fruit was used mainly for health and beauty, it also served as a sustaining source of food and nutrition during times of famine.

Morinda citrifolia is also one of the most beautiful plants on the islands with its large dark green shiny leaves and its creamy white flower blossoms.  The plant reaches heights of 15-20 feet!  The Morinda citrifolia plant yields fruit all year round.  On every branch of every plant, there are many fruit in various stages of development, so the fruit must be checked and  harvested regularly.  The mature fruit is green and measures about the size of a potato.  When the fruit is ripe, it turns yellowish-white and becomes very soft and aromatic.

The native Polynesians have been harvesting and preparing their own "noni juice" and other noni "remedies" for centuries.  Now many of these ancient traditions preserved for centuries are now being verified by science!  They harvest the fruit just before it is fully ripe and then place it in a jar in the direct sunlight.  Once the fruit is fully ripe, it is mashed into a puree and the juice is extracted through a cloth.

So, noni isn't new - it's just new to us!  Now, in modern times, it has attracted the attention of botanists, scientists, researchers and medical professionals around the world!  And now, thanks to Tahitian Noni International, millions of people around the world are benefiting from this amazing miracle from paradise!
